What is content decay?

Content decay is the gradual loss of traffic and rankings from pages that previously performed. It happens as competitors publish better material, facts go stale, internal links break, or a migration disrupts structure. Because it is gradual rather than sudden, it is rarely investigated.

Most sites lose more traffic to decay than they gain from new publishing, and the usual response — publish more — compounds the maintenance burden instead of fixing it. Recovering an indexed page with existing authority is consistently cheaper and faster than earning the same position from nothing.

Diagnosis matters more than a blanket refresh. Competitive loss, technical breakage, factual staleness and self-cannibalisation each need a different fix, and sometimes the right answer is to merge or retire the page.
