Why Your Website Gets Traffic But Doesn't Generate Leads

Three

Possible Causes

Diagnose

Before You Redesign

This is the most common brief we receive, and the most commonly misdiagnosed. The default response is a redesign, which changes everything at once and teaches you nothing about which change worked.

The three causes, and how to tell them apart

  • Wrong visitors — traffic arriving with informational intent when your page serves commercial intent. Check the queries and landing pages: if the top entries are definitional, the audience was never going to enquire.
  • Unclear next step — visitors who read, scroll and leave. Check scroll depth and time on page. High engagement with no action points here.
  • Unanswered objection — visitors who reach the form and stop. Check form abandonment and which field they left on. The question that stops the purchase is not being answered anywhere.

What the data usually shows

In most audits the traffic is fine and the page asks for commitment before demonstrating value — a phone number requested before the visitor knows whether you handle their situation. The page is not underperforming because it is ugly; it is underperforming because the exchange it proposes is unbalanced.

Why redesigns often make it worse

A redesign changes structure, copy, layout and calls to action simultaneously. If the number moves, nobody knows why; if it falls, nobody knows which change to revert. You have spent a quarter and acquired no knowledge you can reuse.

The difficulty is not knowing that friction matters. It is identifying which specific friction is costing you, on which template, for which traffic segment — and having enough volume to know whether a change actually worked.

What this means for your business

Spend a day on diagnosis before authorising any build. Queries, scroll behaviour, form abandonment and the objections your sales team hears most will usually locate the problem precisely. Our CRO guide covers the method in full.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should we redesign the site?

Not before diagnosis. Most conversion problems are located in one or two templates and a form, and fixing those is faster and cheaper than a rebuild — and it tells you what actually mattered.

How much traffic do we need to test?

Enough that a realistic improvement could reach significance in a reasonable window. Below that, apply judgement and record it as judgement rather than dressing it up as a test.

Is it the copy or the design?

Usually the offer and the sequence rather than either. What you ask for, and when you ask relative to what you have demonstrated, moves the number more than styling does.

Strategy Call

See Exactly Where You Stand.

Every relationship starts with intelligence, not a proposal. A strategy call gives you a clear picture of your AI visibility, search authority, and competitive gaps — and a realistic view of what is achievable.
