What is the best CMS for SEO?
No platform ranks better than another. Google has stated it has no preference, and the differences that matter are what a platform makes easy or hard — URL control, rendering, page speed and structured data. A well-built site on any mainstream CMS outranks a poorly-built one on the 'best' CMS.
What actually varies is the friction. WordPress and Drupal give full control over URLs, redirects and markup. Shopify constrains URL structure in ways you have to design around. Squarespace and Wix limit technical control, which becomes a ceiling if search is a primary channel. Headless gives the most control and the most responsibility.
The factor that overwhelms platform choice is rendering. A site whose content only appears after JavaScript executes can be invisible to crawlers and to AI retrieval agents regardless of which CMS produced it. Check what a crawler receives by viewing source, not the inspector.
Choosing a CMS for SEO reasons alone is usually the wrong frame. Choose it for who publishes, what it must integrate with, and whether you can leave — then build it properly. That is what decides rankings.
