What are AI agents for business?

An AI agent is a system that pursues a goal across several steps rather than answering one prompt — retrieving information, calling tools, and deciding what to do next. In business use it works best when scoped tightly: defined boundaries, an escalation path when it is uncertain, and an audit trail of what it did.

The difference from a chatbot is autonomy over sequence. A chatbot responds; an agent plans, acts, checks the result and adjusts. That is genuinely useful for multi-step work like intake triage, research assembly or reconciliation.

It is also where the risk sits. Open-ended autonomy in a process with real consequences is difficult to defend to a regulator or a customer. We scope agents narrowly and build the escalation path before the capability.
