GEO & AI Search
Should I invest in SEO or GEO?
This is largely a false choice. The technical foundations are shared, and traditional search still delivers the substantial majority of referral traffic. Treat GEO as a second surface built on the same base, not as a replacement — and be sceptical of anyone declaring SEO dead while selling its successor.
Both facts are true simultaneously: Google still refers vastly more traffic than generative engines, and that share is eroding. The Reuters Institute's 2026 report documents a 33% decline in organic referrals to over 2,500 news sites between November 2024 and 2025, while search remains by far the larger channel.
Practically, most of the early work is shared. Crawler access, entity resolution, extractable structure and topical depth serve both surfaces. Where they diverge is measurement — answer share and citation share are sampled separately — and external corroboration, which weighs more heavily in generative retrieval.
Declaring SEO finished is an effective way to sell GEO. It also contradicts the available referral data, which is worth noticing when you hear it.
