The three terms

SEO — search engine optimization — is the older discipline: earning a position in a ranked list of links. AEO — answer engine optimization — describes being the source a system uses when it answers directly rather than returning links. GEO — generative engine optimization — describes visibility inside answers generated by large language models.

AEO predates the generative wave. It emerged around featured snippets, People Also Ask and voice assistants, where the answer appeared without a click. GEO arrived with ChatGPT-style synthesis. The two overlap heavily, and most practitioners now use them interchangeably.

Where they genuinely differ

  • SEO optimises for selection from a ranked list. The unit is the page, and the outcome is a click.
  • AEO optimises for extraction. The unit is the passage, and the outcome is being quoted — historically inside a search result, with attribution and often a link.
  • GEO optimises for synthesis. The unit is still the passage, but the model composes an answer from several sources, and attribution is inconsistent and non-deterministic.

The practical difference between AEO and GEO is smaller than the terminology implies. Both reward the same underlying work: content structured so a passage stands alone, an entity a system can resolve, and independent sources that corroborate what you say about yourself.

The demand data, which is unflattering

We keyword-mapped 1,957 terms across two Google Keyword Planner exports covering August 2025 to July 2026. Searches containing 'AEO' or 'answer engine optimization': zero. Not low — absent from the export entirely.

Two honest readings. Either the term is too early to register measurable volume, which is plausible for a category still forming. Or it is largely practitioner jargon that buyers do not use, in which case optimising to rank for it reaches other agencies rather than clients.

We think the first is more likely and we are not certain. What we are certain of is that a supplier selling you an AEO retainer distinct from GEO should be asked what work is in one and not the other. If they cannot answer specifically, there is no second discipline.

What the work actually is

Whatever it gets called, the mechanics converge on four things. This is why we treat it as one engagement rather than three.

  • Retrieval access. A blocked agent in robots.txt makes everything else invisible, and it is free to fix. It is the most common blocker we find in audits.
  • Entity resolution. Consistent naming, structured data matching visible content, and corroborating profiles, so a system can resolve you rather than guess.
  • Passage independence. A section that only makes sense after reading the two above it cannot be lifted as an answer. Retrieval works at passage level.
  • External corroboration. What independent sources say about you carries weight precisely because you do not control it — the slowest layer, and the one competitors cannot buy quickly.

What nobody can promise, under any acronym

Generated answers are non-deterministic. The same question produces different text and different citations from one run to the next. Any guaranteed citation — AEO, GEO or otherwise — should be treated as a warning about the supplier rather than a feature of the offer.

What is measurable is answer share and citation share, sampled repeatedly against a question set fixed before results are seen. Variation within a period should be reported alongside variation between periods, because a movement smaller than the noise is not a result.

How we handle the terminology

We use GEO because it is the term with measurable search demand and the one clients arrive using. We treat AEO as describing the same work. If your organisation uses AEO internally, we will use your term — the vocabulary matters far less than whether the four mechanics above are actually being done.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is answer engine optimization (AEO)?

Optimising so a system uses your content as the source when it answers a question directly, rather than returning a list of links. It emerged around featured snippets and voice assistants, and now overlaps heavily with GEO.

Is AEO different from GEO?

In origin, yes: AEO predates generative models. In practice the work converges — retrieval access, entity resolution, passage independence and external corroboration serve both. Ask anyone selling them separately what is in one and not the other.

Should we invest in AEO specifically?

Invest in the mechanics rather than the acronym. If a supplier's AEO offer contains work their GEO offer does not, that is worth hearing. If it is the same engagement with a different label, you are paying twice for a name.

Does AEO have search demand?

Not measurably. Across 1,957 keywords in two Keyword Planner exports covering Aug 2025 to Jul 2026, terms containing AEO or answer engine optimization returned zero volume. That may mean the category is early rather than absent.
