What is the difference between web design and web development?
Design decides what the site says and how someone moves through it. Development builds the thing that has to be fast, secure and maintainable. Splitting them across two suppliers is where most of the quality is lost, because the handoff has no owner.
Design covers message, information architecture, interface and conversion paths — the decisions about what the site communicates and how a visitor progresses.
Development covers the build: rendering strategy, performance, security, integrations and the architecture that determines whether the site can be extended in two years without a rewrite.
The reason to care commercially is the seam between them. A design handed over as flat screens leaves every technical consequence to be discovered during build, and the discoveries are always expensive. We do both so the decisions are made together.
