What the site has to accomplish

The largest cost variable and the one most briefs omit. Page count barely moves a quote; obligations do.

In commercial terms — more qualified enquiries, fewer support calls, shorter sales cycle. Not 'look modern'.

Name the number. If nobody can, the project has no definition of success and every later disagreement is unsettleable.

One primary audience. A site written for everyone converts no one.

Scope

What suppliers price against. Vague scope produces vague quotes and expensive change requests.

Twenty products on one template is far less work than five bespoke pages.

CRM, ERP, inventory, booking, payment, email. Each adds scope invisible in a mockup.

A second language is not double the work, and it is not free either.

Content

The most underestimated driver. If content has to be produced first, it becomes the critical path, not development.

Written and accurate, needs editing, partly missing, or does not exist. Be honest — this is where schedules slip.

Name a person. 'Marketing' is not an owner.

What already exists

A site with rankings has something to lose. This section decides whether migration work belongs in the quote.

If nothing is structurally wrong, a targeted fix may beat a rebuild at a fraction of the cost.

Top pages by clicks, and any page you know earns links. These must survive the move.

URLs, integrations, a brand element, a workflow someone depends on.

Practical

The unglamorous constraints that decide whether a schedule is real.

Withholding this does not get you a better price; it gets you proposals that miss. Say whether it includes content and ongoing work.

A trade show is a deadline. 'Q3' usually is not.

Consistently one of the most expensive variables, and never technical.

If the answer is nobody, say so now. It changes the right platform choice.
